As per recent studies, bariatric surgery is recommended for adults who are obese with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 and also for people with a BMI of at least 30. It includes the following types :-

Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y), the most common method of reducing weight, is also non-reversible and it works by reducing the amount of food intake as well as decreasing nutrition absorption.

Gastric bypass surgery refers to a technique in which the stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and a much larger lower “remnant” pouch and then the small intestine is rearranged to connect to both.

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS), includes horizontal gastric resection with the closure of duodenal stump, gastroileal anastomosis, and ileoileal anastomosis, to form a 50 cm common channel as well as 250 cm alimentary channel.

Sleeve gastrectomy in this stomach is reduced to 15% of its original size. This is done by removing the large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature. The end result is a sleeve or tube-like structure.
